How to Choose the Perfect Leather Skirt

A really great, oh-so-soft, leather skirt is the type of piece you’ll have in your closet forever, so how can it take so long to invest in a good quality one? Much like a good quality coat, the type of leather skirt you’ll wear for decades comes at a price. You may wonder how much you would wear it. However, they are investment piece; a leather skirt makes even the most basic outfit feel dressed up, helping you take all your other clothes up a notch in the process. Knowing how hard it can be to decide on the right skirt, we’ve put together some guides for you when picking out your leather skirt.

    Consider your lifestyle

Pick a shape and fit that you’ll get the most wear out of. 18ths, 21sts, Uni parties and going ‘out-out’ twice a week? Go shorter and show off those legs! Just be aware that they do ride up when you sit down, so don’t go too too short. If your weekend activities have moved on to wine bars and brunches, midi or knee length will lend you a powerful and seductive leather presence.

    Know your leather

Different types of leather will feel different when you wear them, for example cows leather is heavier and more durable, while lambskin leather will be more soft and supple but will require more looking after. The skirt I’m wearing above is lambs leather which makes it really comfortable to wear (but not cheap).

    Buy for your Body

There are an infinite variety of body shapes! To help create a guide for buying a leather skirt we have some recommendations for these figure types that you may be interested in, taking into account the unique charcteristics of leather and how it moves on the body.

Go for a midi-length pencil skirt that will smooth (but not squash) your curves. High waisted styles will define the waist and create an hourglass shape. Splits are really important if you are going fitted and below the knee. Leather has no give so you won’t be able to walk otherwise. That said, full-length leather skirts look fabulous on a curved figure as Honour's laced back skirt shows so well how devilishly sexy a high waisted black leather skirt is. The fit is snug and the look deadly - you won't just gain attention - you'll raise pulses!

Choose a slightly shorter hemline (on or just above the knee rather than midi) to elongate your legs. This one from Leatherotics is a gorgeous black leather skirt with impressive details, The shape of the season and made from beautifu goat nappal leather, the black leather pencil skirt will be the one piece you need to invest in. Mix business with pleasure when you add this black leather skirt to a pair of heels and a button-down shirt. Its zip front offers a flirty look, while the metal hardware adds an edgy finishing touch. This short pencil skirt is sure to turn heads whether you wear it to the office or for a night out with friends.

A pleated A-line style like this Leatherotics version works well. Press buttons instead of stitching create the pleats for a unique appearance that pairs with everything from a corset to a lace bra. The wraparound style is easy to put on and even easier to take off.

Body hugging will create curves but you can also get away with a pleats, ruffles, quilting or even bows (just not all at once). Although remember this is an investment piece so avoid anything too fussy or ‘on trend’. I love this Leatherotics style, leather fishtail / mermaid skirt; effortless elegance and dramatic detailing combine to elevate the classic long leather skirt into a truly sophisticated piece. The fishtail back of this tight-fitting black leather skirt adds upscale appeal to a poet blouse or sheer shell. Pair it with stilettos and a shrug for a show-stopping, attention-getting entrance at your next affair.
